Bedwell’s principal, Amy G. Phelan, was asked by the TCRWP to host a ‘learning day’ for principals from Project Schools all over the State. It was the Project’s hope that principals from all over New Jersey could acquire a vision of what is possible with strong leadership and when teachers are supported to do the work of reading and writing workshop.
This was the first time that the TCRWP ever hosted such a day in New Jersey. Over 30 educators from across the State attended the Learning Day at Bedwell where they examined artifacts of student learning on the bulletin boards throughout the school, listened in to teachers’ minilessons, and spoke with students during Reading and Writing Workshop to learn firsthand how and what they were learning.
Feedback from all involved was overwhelmingly positive. In an email to teachers after the event, Lucy Calkins said, “What fun it was today to see your amazing wonderful school and to see the principals from all over New Jersey gaping over all you have accomplished.” Laurie Pessah also followed up with teachers saying, “It was wonderful to be in a setting where children, teachers and administrators are passionate about the work and creating a culture of learning.” In speaking about Bedwell she also noted, “Their classrooms were an oasis of excellence.” Bedwell has had requests from other districts for their teachers to visit this ‘oasis’ and we look forward to continuing to share our educational journey.
